I'm sore and tired

We've been waiting for insurance to approve of the Arthgram (MRI) that Dary will undergo to address his hip pain. In the meantime, we've been pounding out the miles. Last Sunday we skipped our "light" day for an 11 miler, anticipating taking a couple of weeks off for the procedure. But now it won't be until Sept 9, so I'm wondering if we should do 12 this Sunday so by the time Dary recovers, we'll be "on track." Trouble is, the last two runs have been killers, and we really needed an easy week last week and we didn't give it to ourselves, so now I feel so beat up.

We also started interval training once a week on the treadmill. Talk about revving up my metabolism, but I can feel my legs really hurting from them.

And work has been stressful which is ridiculous because I don't have a stressful job (just a stressful environment). So I haven't been getting any sleep.

Oh, and I've been sick all week but because I'm missing 2 1/2 days to take Dary to his procedure, I felt bad about calling out sick so that hasn't helped either.

I can't wait until running is just running again (when Dary is pain free). When running becomes my great escape.

And I think I'm gonna stop being some kind of a crazy martyr at work, never taking sick time (to the point of making my sick kids go to school so I can "look good" to my supervisors...whatever). If' I'm sick, I'm getting some rest. If my boys are sick, and taking care of them. And I'm going to take care of me so I can run that crazy race in January!

The Goofy Path: Sunday, Sunday

Wow, I'm a crappy running blogger. I gotta try harder. But blogging has been like my running lately. Spotty, sporadic. No, I take that back. I've been consistent. At least in getting up 4 mornings a week at 5am to run. Getting out there. Running. But my running has been pretty poor quality.

I blame Dary. Or, really, I blame his hips.

Dary had a groin injury, or so he thought. So we took it easy. And it didn't help. Then he took some serious time off. No running at all. And that didn't help. And as our countdown continued, I got antsy and insisted that he go to a doctor, and not a GP, but a specialist. And he did; one that seemed to have the "if it hurts when you do "that" then don't do "that"" approach. That just pissed "me" off. So I told him to go to a chiropractor; after a month of feel-good cracking his chiropractor finally had the first good idea of any of the doctors: he needs an MRI. Well, to get an MRI he had to go to an orthopedic; so he looked at our provider list (what a great way to find a doctor, huh?) and happened to luck upon an orthopedic that specializes in hips. This doctor took one look at the X-Ray he's been toting around town and spotted the problem in an instant. Irritated cartilege in his hips. It's there, but you cannot see it unless you know where to look. Two other doctors DID NOT know where to look.

There's a treatment; it involves an MRI, ink and something else (I think a steriod) injected into his hips during the MRI. We are waiting for insurance to approve all of this (which I hope happens quick, because Dary's pain has become an all day, every day occurence), and are told that this procedure pretty much fixes the problem "instantly" which, I've learned, is doctor speak for "a couple of weeks at best."

So off we go now, for 8 miles (scratch that; we ended up going 9.88 miles), our "short" long run (next week is 11, we must plow ahead toward 20). Talk about a goofy path...

10 on the treadmill

Dary went out of town camping this weekend, and since I didn't want to be out on the trail by myself at the crack of dawn (the trailhead is behind an old casino, I'm just uncomfortable there by myself), I decided I would have to tackle my long run on the treadmill. I managed to get through the 10 miles in about 2:11, give or take; I stopped a couple of times because of some technical difficulties...with my iPhone (it was plugged into my TV so I could watch Bizarre Foods re-runs). And being in the garage, it was hot (the car said 94 degrees). I have a small swamp cooler, but it really just made things more humid than cool. Then my fan just seemed to blow hot air; the net result was a run in the wind, with high humidity and a temp of 94 degrees. Lovely. But I made it.

The Goofy Path: Rolling with the punches

Today I did a 10-miler on the River Mountains Trail. I started at around 6:25am, at a temperature of around 91 degrees. By the time I was done, around 9am, it was 96 degrees. I had to walk most of the last 2 miles; the heat really overwhelmed me, something I wasn't expecting, especially since the first 3 miles felt so great and I was very comfortable at my goal pace of 5.5mph. I don't want to start increasing my long run until I can run the 10 miles under 2 hours; I was just 2 minutes short of my goal last week, but this week things really fell apart.

As I sit here drinking a chocolate milk and filling my tub with icy cold water for my recovery, I am worried about the Goofy Challenge. Dary is still injured; we don't know what is going on, he's seen 3 different doctors. If he can't start training soon, I'm afraid he'll have to opt out, and I'm note sure I'm interested in trying to do this on my own. It was as much about doing something together, as a couple, as it was about anything else.

Mardi Gras Masquerade 10K & 5K, February 21, 2009

This past Saturday my husband and I had the pleasure of running in the Mardi Gras Masquerade 10K, a Calico Racing event. This was a race of many firsts for us; my husband's first 10K, our first time on the River Mountains Trail, and our first race with Calico Racing. And we had a terrific time.

The races (I should mention that there was a 5K and a 10K) were "out and back" courses that followed a portion of the River Mountains Trail from the trailhead at Railroad Pass Casino, heading West and North along the trail (toward the city and away from the lake) and back again. Aside from some moderate rolling hills along approximately the first (and last) half mile, the course was relatively flat. And once runners made it past that first hilly half mile, they were treated to a wonderful, clear view of the city. For my husband and I, this was a real treat, as we only live a few miles away yet we'd never run on this trail; we didn't realize that the trail was paved (asphalt). The entire loop is not paved, although I believe that is the eventual plan, but the 3.1 mile stretch that this race was held on was. The path was also marked for two way traffic, allowing for plenty of room for the runners on course, as well as the occasional cyclist we encountered along the way.

Race check in was a breeze; we picked up our bib, timing chip and shirts (I love my purple tech shirt) and then ducked back into our car to stay warm. Many of the other runners were sporting colorful beads and masks (available for purchase by Calico Racing) but we elected to not run with anything that might bounce around too much! There were bathrooms in the casino near the exit so runners didn't have to wander through the casino looking for facilities. Since the starting line was at the trailhead, it was a good thing that the race was relatively small (around 100 runners for the 10K) since we all had to scoot through a somewhat narrow walkway to begin.

Along the course there were water stops approximately every mile; kudos to Calico Racing for having such wonderfully ethusiastic volunteers and clear mile markers along the route! Once at the finish, there were some nice goodies for the runners (coffee, juice, rolls, etc.) while award were handed out. It was very difficult to hear the results, depsite the bullhorn used by the race director (Joyce?), so we headed out before it was over. It was about a day before the results were posted online, as well as some photos taken by Evan Pilchik Photography. Overall, this was a very enjoyable experience! We hope to return to trail soon for some of our weekend long runs, and we also look forward to enjoying another Calico Racing event!

Running Southern Nevada

This is a place to find events that involve running, walking, endurance, hiking, or any combination of those elements and a dash of family as well. I have a difficult time finding races and hikes and other stuff, for whatever reason, so I thought I'd gather all of this information in once place for myself rather than having a dozen bookmarks to deal with all the time. If you find this information helpful, great! If you have something to add, great! If you do not find this helpful, well, feel free to move along (to the left, if you don't mind)!
